The Core Facility Genomics & Bioinformatics is a scientific infrastructure of Faculty V and VI, where the service concept is at the forefront. The main aim is to support users' research projects with reliable and timely collected data. Your work as a Research Scientist will be crucial in this mission. In addition, the Core Facility Genomics & Bioinformatics supports its users in project planning and in analysing the data collected. The Core Facility Genomics & Bioinformatics is equipped with modern high-throughput sequencing devices, which are adapted in line with equipment development and scientific progress, as well as access to a high-performance computing and storage infrastructure (HPC), which is currently being expanded as part of multiple large-scale research grant applications that are multi-institutional and inter-disciplinary in nature.
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist with experience in working with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data to join our collaborative and supportive team. The ideal candidate will have expertise in working with large sequencing datasets, developing reproducible and scalable bioinformatics workflows, and creating documentation and use-cases for novel software protocols. The successful candidate will work towards contributing to the mission of The Core Facility Genomics & Bioinformatics in supporting researchers who are using NGS technologies at the University and beyond, and work alongside with a team of dedicated professionals.
Your responsibilities:
- Establishing bioinformatics workflows to store and organize diverse NGS datasets (e.g., (meta) genomics, (meta) transcriptomics, etc).
- Establishing bioinformatics workflows for the analysis of ‘omics sequencing datasets that rely on state-of-the-art best-practices, tools and strategies.
- Supporting users in project planning and analysing the collected data.
- Participating in graduate and undergraduate teaching efforts.
- Participating in collaborative research projects and proposal writing efforts.
Your qualifications:
- B.S., MSc, and preferable PhD in life sciences, computational sciences, statistics, or any other related field.
- High proficiency in the UNIX terminal environment and BASH programming, high proficiency in Python and/or other modern and mainstream scripting and/or programming languages.
- Experience with workflow managers such as Snakemake or Nextflow, distributed version control systems such as git, container development and deployment systems such as docker, and HPC workload managers such as slurm.
- Familiarity with the state-of-the-art computational strategies and software libraries that are commonly used in the analysis and interpretation of NGS datasets through applications of machine learning, biostatistics, and/or visualization.
- High level of motivation, creativity, self-responsibility and self-organization.
- Demonstrated experience in scientific paper writing, figure making, and publishing processes.
- Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
We offer:
- An interdisciplinary and collaborative environment that supports innovation and professional development of team members.
- Participation in the development of a young university team with creative freedom.
- A stimulating research environment in a highly motivated international team.
- The possibility of independent scientific project work and habilitation.
- Collaboration with national and international teams and consortia.
- Opportunity to work remotely.
