The DAAD is the organization of German universities for the promotion of their international relations. The DAAD runs over 250 programmes, through which it funds more than 67,000 German and foreign scholars worldwide per annum. By promoting tertiary education in developing countries, the DAAD contributes to the development of these countries.

 

In the context of a comprehensive reform of the Ethiopian economic and education sector, German development cooperation supports the “Engineering Capacity Building Program (ECBP)”. Within the reform of the academic training in Ethiopia, the DAAD is looking for an experienced and committed

 

Scientific Director for Ethiopia at the Institute of Technology for Textile, Garment and Fashion Design (Bahir Dar University)

 

In Ethiopia, Bahir Dar University is the only educational institution offering Textile Engineering, Garment Engineering and Fashion Design at degree level. The Institute of Technology for Textile, Garment and Fashion Design (iOTEX) has a history of more than 40 years. Earlier, the programme was only at the advanced diploma level particularly when the department was under former Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute which was established in 1963. iOTEX is one of the limbs of the Bahir Dar University whose objectives perfectly fit the strategy of agriculture-led and export-oriented industrialization and the effort to combat the problem of textile and garment manufacturing and trade of the country. Tasks:

  • Responsibility for the ongoing reorganization and leadership of the institute
  • Overall responsibility for qualified education, applied research and technology transfer at the institute
  • Responsibility for all academic affairs
  • Responsibility for the financial, administrative and organizational operating business
  • External representation of the institute
  • Establishment of international university cooperations
  • Transfer of experiences, knowledge and skills to an Ethiopian successor (selection, mentoring, training and transfer processes)

 

All tasks are to be executed in accordance with the politics and procedures of the institution.

 

Duration: Two years, extension possible. Maximum period: five years. Starting: as soon as possible.

 

Requirements:

Applicants should hold an academic degree (at least Ph.D.) in a textile related field of engineering, at least 5 years practical experience in a leading position at a university and two years experience as the head of a scientific institution. It is expected that applicants have practical experience with organizational transformation and change management processes in higher education institutions.

 

This position requires organizational development skills and methodological expertise in establishing management instruments regarding strategic management, human resource development and institution building.

International academic relations and relevant international experience in the management of textile related engineering projects are requested. Applicants should combine sound leadership skills and assertiveness with sensitivity. Excellent mediation skills enable the applicant to mitigate conflicts.

 

In this responsible managerial position, applicants are also expected to deal with challenges, stress and uncertainties. Fluency in English and another international language is requested. Working experience in Ethiopia or another non-European country is an asset.

 

The Scientific Director is expected to utilize supportive DAAD programmes for the benefit of AMIT. Therefore, proven record of successful academic relations with German institutions of tertiary education is required.
